Maine Historical Society (MHS) has exciting plans to engage Mainers across the state as key participants in the celebration of America’s 250th birthday, including conversations about the shared values that connect and give us strength as Mainers and Americans.
MHS’s Revolutionary Maine: America at 250 is a year- long, collaborative initiative that will impact hundreds of thousands of people from all backgrounds in every corner of the state through special events; a major exhibition; educational programming; digital resources; and a 16-county tour of MHS’s copy of the Declaration of Independence that will give every Mainer the opportunity to see and engage with this sacred document.
The effort will highlight and celebrate communities throughout Maine—both their contributions during the Revolutionary era and today. It will illustrate Maine’s important role in the American Revolution and support our continuing efforts to uphold our founding principles.
Revolutionary Maine will explore the dreams and ambitions that bind all Mainers, and Americans, together—the drive to find opportunity, to make a home, to raise families, to be part of a community.
It will celebrate the revolutionary democratic principles that the United States was founded upon, and create opportunities for all Mainers to reflect on these
most sacred words—the words, immortalized in the Declaration of Independence, that have guided us for 250 years:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
We will encourage all Mainers to consider:
What do those words mean to you?
What are our responsibilities as citizens?
Looking to the future, what hopes do you have for our country? For Maine?
The 250th provides a tremendous opportunity for Maine to lean in—to draw on and once again demonstrate Mainers’ long history of acting through common sense values, respect, and independence. To provide true civic leadership. To demonstrate what productive civic dialog can look like.
