NASA Administrator James Webb once stated: “If it were not for a woman, Margaret Chase Smith, we would never have placed a man on the moon.” For more than fifteen years, Maine’s senator from Skowhegan served on the Senate Aeronautical and Space Sciences Committee which helped secure funding for NASA, propelled the public/private partnerships that made American satellites and communications technology the envy of the world, and helped ensure that, even in the realm of the night sky, the Cold War was being fought.

That commitment to the technological future and the scientific and educational advances that space exploration offered are important, if lesser known, aspects of the Senator’s career.

The Margaret Chase Smith Library welcomes a new exhibition by photographer John Meader whose images of stars, planets, and galaxies will adorn our Gallery this summer. An opening event, with light refreshments served, will occur on July 7, 2025 from 4:00-5:30. Please join us.

No registration required for the event. Extra parking will be available on the side lawn.
